How long a Betfair withdrawal takes

Betfair publishes three different withdrawal speeds and the one you get depends entirely on the method, not on your balance, your account age, or anything you can influence at the point of withdrawing. The useful detail is the boundary: if your money has not arrived within four hours, it is almost certainly on the 2 to 5 working day path, and Betfair asks you to let all five days pass before getting in touch.

The useful detail is the boundary: if your money has not arrived within four hours, it is almost certainly on the 2 to 5 working day path, and Betfair asks you to let all five days pass before getting in touch.
If you do not receive your withdrawal within 4 hours, it is likely due to that card type not being eligible for instant withdrawals.
Betfair's guidance follows from that: unless you are used to your withdrawals arriving within four hours, wait the full five working days before contacting support.

The three speeds

Method Time to reach your bank
Instant Bank Transfer Immediately
Visa cards and participating Mastercards (instant withdrawals) 1 to 4 hours
Card payments, standard withdrawals 2 to 5 working days

Betfair names Instant Bank Transfer as "the quickest withdrawal method", accessed from the Popular tab on the withdrawal page.

Bank holidays are not working days. On a bad calendar a standard withdrawal requested before a long weekend can legitimately take over a week.

The four-hour rule, which is the actually useful part

Betfair spells out what a delay past four hours means:

"If you do not receive your withdrawal within 4 hours, it is likely due to that card type not being eligible for instant withdrawals. In that instance it should take 2 to 5 working days to show in your bank account."

So a withdrawal that misses four hours is not stuck, it is on the slower rail, because your card was never eligible for the fast one. "All Visa cards and participating Mastercard's" is the eligibility line, and the word doing the work is participating: some Mastercards simply are not.

Betfair's guidance follows from that: unless you are used to your withdrawals arriving within four hours, wait the full five working days before contacting support. Contacting them on day two gets you told to wait.

There is one exception to the patience rule. Betfair says that if you have not received an instant withdrawal within 24 hours, get in touch, that is the case where something has genuinely gone wrong rather than routed slowly.

After five working days: ask for the ARN

If a withdrawal has not landed after five working days, Betfair's support team can issue a Tracing Number (ARN), Acquirer Reference Number.

"This is a unique number that tags a debit card transaction when it goes from the merchant's bank (The Acquiring Bank) through the card scheme to the cardholder's bank (The Issuer). The ARN can be used to track a payment or refund."

This is the single most useful thing on this page. Once Betfair has sent the money, it is your bank that has it and your bank that can find it, and banks will generally not look without a reference. Asking for the ARN turns "it hasn't arrived" into a traceable transaction.

Two constraints on how you withdraw

Closed loop. Like Smarkets, Betfair returns funds to the methods you deposited with, which can mean splitting a withdrawal across more than one card or account.

A closed payment method. If you withdrew to a card or account that is no longer active, Betfair documents that as its own support case rather than an error, it is a known situation with a process, not a lost payment.

Compared with the event-contract exchanges

Venue Fast path Slow path What holds it up
Betfair instant bank transfer 2 to 5 working days your card's eligibility
Kalshi n/a banking rails and review compliance process
Polymarket ~seconds n/a swap liquidity
Novig n/a n/a KYC, or funds in escrow

Betfair's delays are the most boring kind, which is a compliment: they are payment-rail delays with published timescales and a tracing procedure, not discretionary holds. Nobody at Betfair is deciding whether you get your money.

All timescales, the four-hour rule and the ARN description are quoted from Betfair's own support centre, read from an Internet Archive capture dated 28 October 2025 and checked 2026-08-27, betfair.com and its support centre are geo-blocked from where this site is maintained. Timescales are the kind of figure a payments provider changes without announcement, so treat the capture date as the date these were true. Betfair's own withdrawal page shows you the expected time for your chosen method when you confirm, and that figure beats this one.
